The exhibition Print in Progress, hosted at the Barcsay Hall of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, offers a comprehensive overview of the transformations and diverse genres within contemporary Hungarian graphic art over the past four decades. The subtitle, Contemporary Hungarian Graphics in the Plane and in Space, highlights a pivotal shift in the medium—where graphic art moves beyond its traditional two-dimensional plane (paper) into three-dimensional space, evolving into spatial graphics and installations that explore new artistic possibilities.

Featuring nearly fifty works, the exhibition showcases pieces from the University’s Library, Archives, and Art Collection, including works by prominent artists such as Gaál József, Gallusz Gyöngyi, Koronczi Endre, Maurer Dóra, and Szurcsik József. It also highlights some of the most exceptional recent graduation works.

This selection pays tribute to the rich Hungarian graphic tradition while also looking toward the future, emphasizing the continuity of artistic processes. It demonstrates that graphic art remains a dynamic, living, and evolving medium.

While emerging artists confidently embrace traditional techniques such as high, low, and relief printing, they also experiment with contemporary tools and practices. Notable examples include Miklós Kelemen, recipient of the rector’s special prize, and Gacsályi Bíborka, awarded Best of Diploma, who integrates puzzle-like woodcuts into space.

The exhibition not only showcases the diverse styles within the genre but also underscores the ongoing development of graphic art, proving it to be a vibrant and continuously evolving art form. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore a variety of styles and techniques, from traditional printmaking to digital innovations, and discover fresh, original perspectives from emerging talents.
