SUSAN TAYLOR (UK) STAGED
Susan Taylor's exhibition, 'Staged', on show in the Barcsay Gallery, Budapest, is, as she puts it, a staging of works. "It could not in any conventional way be called a retrospective, partly because much of my previous work no longer exists! It is instead a reading of certain images, curated out of their original context, to build a sense of my present interests." This inevitably invokes the questions of time and contingency, especially as Susan's images are all figurative through the use of the notion of performance. Susan is interested in and fascinated by images and how there is flexibility in their life of meaning: they both maintain their autonomy and yet re-invent themselves at every opportunity (if allowed to do so). This present curation looks towards a certain style of showman-ship, to give a feeling of ephemerality, even arbitrariness. Susan sees this as more akin to life as it is experienced and understood than the fixing of meanings that is normally associated with art gallery presentations.
Susan Taylor was one of the art lecturers setting up with Terry Atkinson (Art and Language) the first PhD courses in Fine Art at Leeds University. Since 1999 she is actively working on the development of a student centred research program at Goldsmiths College, University of London. What Susan Taylor and her colleagues began has become an example to follow in the UK within art education. She is one of the leading lecturers on the TIPP courses and is actively supporting the TIPP research initiative. In her lecture, which is also open to the public, she will talk about her work and research.
For Susan Taylor?s exhibition a small publication is available.

TIPP Foundation was established in 2004 for the developments of collaborative research initiatives between Goldsmiths College, London and the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. TIPP (Tihany International Postgraduate Program) is a new initiative, which is mainly based in the Hungarian University?s premises in Tihany and in Budapest. It?s main activities involve courses, symposiums, video- and film programmes, guest lecture programmes, exhibitions and the production of publications.
The 2. TIPP International Course in Contemporary Art (2004) was a three-week program on a postgraduate level, last September in Tihany. The international teaching staff oversaw a programme that included lectures, seminars, video programs, tutorials and a final exhibition.
